Heidelberg Mediations - Day Seven

That I with body and soul, both in life and death, am not my own, but belong unto my faithful Savior Jesus Christ

"Jesus"

When I think of my Savior's name I often recall my two month stint as an Outback hostess. I guess I was a host, but I always felt a little hostessy. As I was walking past a table, I overheard a conversation about Jesus. I'll always remember hearing them talk and feeling the excitement and warmth of knowing the sweetness of his name. I still love to hear his name. Almost everytime I speak at the retirement center the piano player plays the old hymn, 'There's Just Something About That Name."

I think the simplest meaning of his name is 'the Lord saves.' His name is common (as common as Joshua). Son of God, and Son of Man. A carpenter. A man who was tired, lonely, weak, crying, sighing, laughing, and dying. But the God who reigns, forgives, heals, saves, provides, intercedes, and lives.

He is supreme over all creation. There is no one like him. He is glorious and we belong to him. We are his bride. It is no wonder our hearts are flamed when we hear his name.

How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds by John Newton

based on Song of Solomon 1:3 “Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth.”

How sweet the Name of Jesus sounds
In a believer's ear!
It soothes his sorrow, heals his wounds,
And drives away his fear.

It makes the wounded spirit whole,
And calms the troubled breast;
'Tis manna to the hungry soul,
And to the weary, rest.

Dear Name, the rock on which I build,
My shield and hiding place,
My never failing treasury, filled
With boundless stores of grace!

By Thee, my prayers acceptance gain,
Although with sin defiled;
Satan accuses me in vain,
And I am owned a child.

Jesus, my Shepherd, Brother, Friend,
My Prophet, Priest, and King,
My Lord, my life, my way, my end,
Accept the praise I bring.

Weak is the effort of my heart,
And cold my warmest thought;
But when I see Thee as Thou art,
I'll praise Thee as I ought.

'Til then I would Thy love proclaim
With every fleeting breath,
And may the music of Thy name
Refresh my soul in death.
