Heidelberg Meditations - Day Five

That I with body and soul, both in life and death, am not my own, but belong unto my faithful Savior Jesus Christ

"but belong"

I've heard it said our deepest need is to be intimately known. It is also our greatest fear. We all want to belong and we want to belong to someone we deem important. The gospel tells us we are loved by the one who knows us best.

If we're honest with ourselves, we know that someone who knows us that well probably shouldn't love us. But he does. He loves us so much that has has adopted us. My pastor told us this year that adopted children can never lose their inheritance.

Those whose faith is in the Son have been adopted and belong in the family of God.

Danny, I am totally stealing this from Tim Keller, cause it seems like it fits with your post on the HC day five....

I. RELIGION v GOSPEL

A. Religion says this:

My self-view swings between two poles. If and when I am living up to my standards, I feel confident, but then I am prone to be proud and unsympathetic to failing people. If and when I am not living up to standards, I feel humble, but not confident-I feel like a failure

B. The Gospel says this:
My self-view is not based on a view of my self as a moralachiever. In Christ I am simul iustus et peccator—simultaneously sinful and lost yet accepted in Christ. I am so bad he had to die for me and I am so loved he was glad to die for me. This leads me to deeper and deeper humility and confidence at the same time. Neither swaggering nor sniveling

amen.

here's some derek

saint and sinner

if you want my glory you gotta take my sin
if you want my future you gotta take my skin
if you want my heart you gotta take my blood
if you want my bed you gotta take my lust

chorus
‘cause i’m not a half a man
i’m not a half a man
Lord knows i love you now
but a saint and a sinner is what i am

if you want my spirit you gotta take my booze
if you want my mystery you gotta take my clues
if you want my child you gotta take my kin
if you want my money you gotta take my rent

chorus

and i doesn’t get better once you see the light
you wake to find that the fight has just begun
i used to be a damn mess but now i look just fine
‘cause you dressed me up and we drank the finest wine
